Languages

At The Illawarra Grammar School, the teaching of foreign languages is highly valued. Students choose between Mandarin, French and Japanese, with Spanish being offered from 2026. Learn more.

Cambridge Science

From 2025, Illawarra Grammar will introduce the Cambridge Science course. This prestigious course, recognised globally for its academic rigour and excellence, will be available by invitation only.

Year 8 Electives

Starting from 2025, Year 8 electives will be on offer, allowing students to explore their passions in creative and engaging ways. Electives include Grand Designs, Heroines and Heroes, Musical Theatre, Visual Culture and Jewellery Making.

Finding Time

Elite musicians and sports people in Years 8 to 10 can choose this elective to manage their academic responsibilities alongside their extracurricular activities. Students participating in elite sport are eligible to join the Podium Program.

Extra English

This course is especially beneficial for students who speak a language or dialect other than English as their first language. The Extra English elective provides targeted literacy support, focusing on foundational skills in reading, comprehension, and writing. It helps students develop phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and vocabulary, while also improving their ability to construct sentences and express ideas clearly across different writing styles.

VET Courses

For students in Years 11 and 12, Illawarra Grammar runs the Entertainment Industry VET course internally. Students interested in staging, production and technical aspects of live events and performances benefit greatly from this course and the practical opportunities provided by School Production.

Upon successful completion of the course students will be awarded a Certificate III in Live Production and Services.

From 2026, VET Hospitality will also be on offer. As students will complete HSC examination in these subjects, one or both VET courses can contribute to a student’s ATAR.

Languages

Language tuition is a hallmark of a traditional “grammar” school education and forms a popular and integral part of our curriculum.
Advanced and Beginner Streams
Starting in 2025, Year 7 students will have the opportunity to enrol in either advanced or beginner streamed classes for all three languages offered, subject to demand.
DELF, HSK and JLPT
For students in Years 8 to 10, proficiency testing will be available to ensure they are placed at the appropriate level for the DELF (French), HSK (Chinese), and JLPT (Japanese) exams. These certifications will not only enhance students’ language learning but also provide valuable credentials that can benefit their future studies in Australia and in countries where these languages are spoken.

Languages from 2025 at Illawarra Grammar:

  • Prep – Japanese
  • Kindergarten to Year 4 – Japanese
  • Year 5 to 6 – Japanese or Mandarin
  • Year 7 – Japanese, Mandarin, or French (language compulsory)
  • Year 8 to 12 – Japanese, Mandarin, or French (elective)

In 2026, we are excited to introduce Spanish Beginners as a new subject for Years 11 and 12.
