Academic Cocurricula
As well as the academic challenges that exist in the classroom, such as Enrichment Mathematics and subject-based competitions, there are many cocurricular activities that are enjoyed by students looking for further academic challenge.
These include chess, debating, the da Vinci Decathlon, the Model United Nations Assembly competition, and musical competitions.
These activities are usually held at lunchtime or after-hours and are open to students who express interest in being involved.

Our pastoral system incorporates personalised academic care for students who are carefully guided in their decision-making regarding subject choices, and provided with thoughtful, timely advice to assist with their academic progress.
A wide range of electives, commencing in Year 7, allow students to begin personalising their suite of subjects from the beginning of their secondary pathway.
The teachers at The Illawarra Grammar School go to considerable lengths to support students with their learning, even providing holiday and weekend lessons, as well as after-hours assistance. By setting challenging targets and providing tailored support, our teachers assist students to achieve impressive results.

From 2025, The Illawarra Grammar School is planning to offer a Years 9 and 10 course in Science from Cambridge University. Enrolment into this course will be by invitation only. We will also launch Year 8 electives Grand Designs, Heroines and Heroes, Musical Theatre, Visual Culture and Jewellery Making. A Finding Time subject, for elite musicians and sports people, and Extra English,for students who need targeted literacy support, will also be available for Years 8 to 10 students.

Additional English tuition is available to students with the ‘Extra English’ elective in Years 8 to 10. We welcome international students, as well as students from diverse cultural backgrounds, whose level of English reaches the required standard. Find out more.
Talented Learners
Many students at Illawarra Grammar are exceptional and successful in more than one area. Not only are these students extended in their classes, many of which are streamed, but there is a range of rich cocurricular opportunities which allow them to explore their talents beyond the day-to-day curriculum.
Tuition Hubs
Library
The Library is a cheerful and happy space in the School, and many students meet their friends for productive time before, during and after school. The Library is open 8.00am – 5.00pm, and on Saturday mornings during term time for students in Years 10 to 12.
The library staff includes a librarian who specialises in research techniques and strategies, enabling students to access expert advice to support their referencing, research and academic writing.
