Senior School

Year 7 to Year 12

The Senior School at The Illawarra Grammar School is characterised by purposeful learning within a joyous atmosphere, set in beautiful grounds. It is a place where students are enabled to enjoy the pursuit of academic excellence underpinned by strong Christian foundations.

Academic Excellence

At The Illawarra Grammar School, students are committed to investigate new areas of learning, to persevere even when content is challenging, and to enjoy the satisfaction of subject mastery.

Academic Cocurricula

As well as the academic challenges that exist in the classroom, such as Honours Maths class and subject-based competitions, there are many co-curricular activities that are enjoyed by students looking for further academic challenge.

Academic Support

EALD

Additional English tuition is available to students with the ‘Extra English’ elective in Years 8 – 10. We welcome international students, as well as students from diverse cultural backgrounds, whose level of English reaches the required standard. Find out more.

Talented Learners

Many students at Illawarra Grammar are exceptional and successful in more than one area. Not only are these students extended in their classes, many of which are streamed, but there is a range of rich co-curricular opportunities which allow them to explore their talents beyond the day to day curriculum.

Tuition Hubs

We offer regular after school assistance from teachers in the School Library, in the form of Tuition Hubs. A regular schedule of assistance is advertised and students are able to meet with a teacher from a particular subject area and get one-on-one assistance.

Library

The Library is a cheerful and happy space in the School, and many students meet their friends for productive time before, during and after school. The Library is open 8.00am – 5.00pm, and on Saturday mornings during term time for students in Years 11 and 12.

The library staff includes a librarian who specialises in research techniques and strategies, enabling students to access expert advice to support their referencing, research and academic writing.

What Senior School students
have to say:

“My experience at TIGS has been amazing. I have the opportunity to be actively involved in the school community with activities like the Student Representative Council, helping to run Chapel and attending netball gala days for the school. I love the variation in my days that I get from attending TIGS and how I can craft my own high school experience.”
Zahra, Year 9
“The Illawarra Grammar School has consistently provided me with a safe learning environment in which I feel supported, and allowed to express my individuality. The consistent education about building character, from assembly, to camp and biblical studies have elevated my understanding of the qualities of a strong character.”
Saxon, Year 11
“I feel that I am part of a diverse student body. The school has a strong commitment to high academic achievements and expects the best from each and every student. It has been very motivating to be surrounded by like-minded classmates who all want to achieve high results.”
Niru, Year 8
“The community and atmosphere makes learning engaging and fun. This community has helped me become the best version of myself. There is a lack of judgment among students and the teachers are always willing to answer any question I have.”
Isaac, Year 9

    Strong Character and Conviction

The goal of our Christ-centred approach to education is to nurture young women and men who are informed about and deeply appreciative of the Christian faith, to be well-rounded, strong and confident leaders of the future.
TIGS graduates are leaders who hold strongly to convictions, yet embrace those who may be different to them. Their actions are deeply aligned with their values and faith, and they continue to go from strength to strength beyond their time at The Illawarra Grammar School.
