Information from the School
Once again, welcome to 2025.
I hope all families received correspondence from the School last week which contained a letter from me, a fridge magnet with the term dates, a car sticker and a copy of the 2024 Academic Highlights brochure. The 2024 School Magazine will be distributed early Term 1, directly to the students.
Information about the dates of upcoming school events can be found on the School Calendar which can be located in OLLE. For more details about accessing this, please view the article titled OLLE Calendar later in this newsletter.
The Year Ahead
We are looking forward to a wonderful year at Illawarra Grammar. Some initiatives that will be introduced for our students in 2025 include the new STEM program in the Junior School, new electives in Year 8 and the introduction of the Year 9 Cambridge Science course. Teachers are also looking forward to the assurance that classes will be capped at 24 students, so that the academic care of their students can be made more effective and more personalised.
The Goodhew Research Centre (Library)
In response to requests from our senior students, The Goodhew Research Centre (Library) hours on Saturdays have been extended. From Saturday 8 February, the Library will be open for students in Years 10-12 from 9.00am to 2.00pm. University students will be available to offer advice in a range of subjects on most Saturdays.
Junior School News
Head of Junior School
Welcome to the new school year, Junior School and Prep families!
It is with great joy and anticipation that we welcome both our returning families and those who are joining our school community for the first time. A special welcome to our new families and their children – we are excited to have you as part of our vibrant School.
This year, we are delighted to have several new teachers joining us:
- Miss Rachael Gargett (1G)
- Miss India Bowden (2B)
- Mrs Maddison Cunniham (3M)
- Mr Jonathan Larkin (5L)
- Mrs Christina Wong (Chaplaincy Team)
Their enthusiasm and expertise will undoubtedly enrich our community as we embark on another exciting year together.
As we step into this new year, we are thrilled about the plans and initiatives ahead. Our new STEM program will provide innovative learning opportunities for our students, fostering critical thinking and creativity. We remain dedicated to academic excellence, student wellbeing and leadership development. Additionally, we will continue to strengthen our Christian initiatives, including opportunities for students to contribute to our local community through service programs.
A review of our cocurricular offerings is also taking place, and we are thankful for the valuable feedback provided by families. This year, we are excited to introduce a Student Representative Council (SRC) for students in Years 3 to 6, giving our students a greater voice in shaping their school experience. Year 6 students will participate in leadership workshops, and our Year 6 Captains will receive specific training early in the year to prepare them for their important roles.
This year, we are focusing on “goodness” as a way of life. Goodness calls us to act with integrity, kindness and purpose, doing what is right, even when it’s hard, and treating others with respect. As a Christian school, we look to Jesus as the ultimate model of goodness, teaching us to love, serve and act with compassion. Throughout the year, we’ll explore how goodness can guide our choices and relationships, encouraging students to reflect this in their actions, whether helping a friend, standing up for what’s right or striving to be their best selves.
As we begin the year, we remind families of the need to ensure students are in the correct uniform, with appropriate haircuts and jewellery. The school hat is compulsory, and all belongings, including swimming and sports clothing, must be clearly labelled with your child’s name. Please check daily that your child has collected their lunch box, drink bottle and other items to minimise lost property. Unlabelled items are often discarded, contributing to environmental waste, so your support in this matter is greatly appreciated.
There are many important dates for families to note as we start the year. You are encouraged to attend our Parent Information – Meet the Teacher sessions in Weeks 2 and 3. These sessions are essential opportunities to meet your child’s classroom teacher and hear about the exciting updates and plans for our School this year. Please also take note of other important dates on the school calendar to stay informed and engaged.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year together, commencing with preparations for the Junior School hybrid musical, The Little Mermaid Jnr. This promises to be an unforgettable experience for our students and school community.
Thank you for your ongoing support as we work together to make this year a success for all our students.

Please note that parents who reach the front of the queue prior to their children being ready, will be asked to complete another loop around the car line.
Vehicles are no longer able to access the road between the IGC car park (entered via Powell St) and the Junior School car park, between the hours of 8.40am – 3.20pm. Senior School News
Head of Senior School
With palpable excitement and energy, the new school year has begun and, after a busy and productive 2024, the Illawarra Grammar community is excited to embrace all that lies ahead.
The hard work, grit and determination that characterised the graduating Class of 2024 produced some of the finest HSC results in the School’s history and I would like to once again congratulate these students and their teachers for their notable achievements. In recent weeks, I have been looking back through the School’s academic records and the significance of these results is stark: the percentage of 2024 Year 12 students who achieved in the top two attainment bands (64%), the average ATAR (80.31), the School’s ranking against every other NSW School (as published by The Sydney Morning Herald) and a range of other measures of academic performance all bear witness to the fact that the results achieved in 2024 are the highest the School has achieved in any of the available records and quite possibly in its long history. Well done indeed!
I commend our 2024 Academic Highlights brochure to you and Mr Breheny’s article below to learn more about the success stories and achievements in what was a remarkable year.
We would all recognise the importance of making a strong start to the year and, for students, this includes making sure that the little things are all in order. Uniform and personal presentation are among those ‘little things’, and these standards are best maintained when parents and the School work together. When parents require their children to come to school with the correct hair, jewellery and uniform in place, it gives a clear message that home and the School are aligned and that parents and carers support the School’s values.
Please support the School in ensuring that your son/daughter is wearing their Summer Uniform correctly, has their hair cut to an appropriate length/style and ensure that any jewellery and makeup are aligned with the School’s expectations.
For ease of reference, expectations for uniform and personal presentation can be found in student diaries on pages 16 and 17, as well as in our online uniform guide.
Wednesday 5 February, 5.30pm, Illawarra Grammar Centre (IGC)
For our Year 7 families, this event provides an opportunity for us to introduce you to the teachers and mentors who will play a significant role in your child’s life over the coming four terms. The second purpose of the evening is to provide you and your son/daughter with a wealth of information about the Year 7 Camp taking place in Week 3 – which we thoroughly expect will be a highlight of the year for many of the students attending.
This event will take place in the IGC, commencing at 5.30pm. Please see the school map to find the location of the IGC. Parking is available in the P2 car park, accessible from the top of Powell Street.
Opening the School Library to senior students on Saturdays during term time proved very popular in 2024. We will continue to offer this service on Saturdays during term time in 2025 – providing a place for senior students in Years 10 – 12 to continue their studies, to prepare for assessment tasks and so forth.
Saturday Library will commence at the end of Week 2, Saturday 8 February. The Library will be open from 9.00am until 2.00pm and students are free to arrive and leave at a time that best suits them.
One significant addition to the service offered in 2024 will be the provision of academic tuition. Initially, senior students in Years 10 – 12 studying any Chemistry, Physics or Maths HSC course will be able to pose questions, seek guidance and learn from the success of ex-students from the Class of 2024 who achieved at high levels in their recent HSC examinations. The tuition service will be available between 11.00am and 2.00pm.
During next Tuesday’s Assembly, Ms Hetherington will be launching the timetable of sports coaching and cocurricular events for the year ahead. Students will be encouraged to consider the wealth of options available before signing up for activities of interest to them. The program will be available to parents via OLLE after the Assembly.
Mr Chris Breheny – Head of Academics
The Illawarra Grammar School’s excellent 2024 HSC results are testament to relentless effort and resolute commitment to excellence that define our academic culture. Our students, supported by dedicated teachers and a school environment that values endeavour and resilience, have demonstrated what is possible when challenges are embraced, high expectations are met with determination, and learning is pursued with grit and purpose.
This year, Illawarra Grammar was ranked 74th in NSW, a wonderful reflection of our School’s commitment to pushing beyond ‘good enough’ in pursuit of personal and collective excellence. Joel Turner led the way with an ATAR of 98.60, while an impressive 51% of our students earned a place on the NSW Distinguished Achievers’ List. Our median ATAR of 86.00 reflects the depth of academic success across the cohort.
More than 52% of our students achieved an ATAR above 85, with 33% above 90, and 12% above 95 – a wonderful achievement that speaks to the strength of our academic programs and culture of collective endeavour. We also celebrate our two NSW All Round Achievers who demonstrated academic consistency by excelling across all of their subjects, while eleven students were nominated for the prestigious SHAPE Exhibition and ENCORE Showcase, highlighting the breadth of talent across both academic and creative disciplines.
Our English faculty continues to set increasingly high standards, with Illawarra Grammar ranked 23rd in NSW for English Advanced, English Extension 1, and English Extension 2. This ranking places us among the state’s leading schools in these courses, a level of achievement that reflects rigorous teaching, high expectations and an unwavering commitment to pushing students beyond the preconceived limits of their potential.
While these results provide us with much to celebrate, they must be leveraged as a platform from which we continue to grow. These results affirm that we are on a trajectory of improvement, and as we commence the 2025 academic year, we will continue to seek out ways to optimise teaching and learning, and challenge our students to aim even higher. Illawarra Grammar is a School where intellectual ambition is nurtured, where rigorous learning is celebrated, and where excellence is defined by the gritty and relentless pursuit of growth.
It’s wonderful to be back for the new academic year, and I look forward to 2025 with much excitement as we continue our journey of academic excellence.

In 2025, the school will no longer print physical calendars as we transition to relying on the digital calendar in OLLE. This change was made to avoid confusion if dates shift, as the digital calendar can easily be updated. It also allows for more detailed event listings, including times and locations.
To support this transition, the OLLE Calendar has been redesigned for better ease of use. While it can be accessed via the OLLE App on mobile, we recommend using the desktop version for the best experience, where you can select a full week or month view. We also encourage parents to explore the filter options, which allow you to view events by specific categories, such as ‘Junior School’ or ‘Important Dates’. We are continuing to refine these filters; stay tuned for further improvements.
Alongside the OLLE Calendar upgrade, you may have noticed that throughout 2024 OLLE has received a major face-lift. OLLE (OnLine Learning Environment) is Illawarra Grammar’s online platform to manage communications and provide access to information.
In 2025, we will begin to use OLLE to send notifications to parents (for example, a reminder to bring money for a bake sale). The OLLE App sends push notifications to let parents know they have a new message. Please make sure you have the OLLE App downloaded and notifications are turned on.
View our OLLE guide here. If you have trouble logging on please email help@tigs.nsw.edu.au

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1
The start of a new school year is like opening a brand-new book—full of untold stories, fresh opportunities and unexpected adventures. But, of course, no beginnings stand alone; they’re connected to a bigger story. That’s why, in Chapel – both in the Junior and Senior School – we’re exploring Genesis—the book of beginnings. Genesis takes us back to where it all started—the universe, humanity, and the unfolding story of life itself. This term, we’ll be asking some big questions: What’s our purpose? How does the book of Genesis fit with scientific explanations? What’s our obligation to each other and the world around us? And what does the beginning tell us about where we’re headed? Every great story has a starting point, and 2025 is a new chapter for all of us. Here’s to new beginnings, big discoveries, and the year ahead!
