The Central Hub of Our School

Mr Adam Foxall & Mrs Karen Bowmaker
May 21 2021

The Goodhew Research Centre (Library) continues to be a central hub for students to gather for a variety of different reasons. Help is available for all students in the areas of research, IT, referencing and finding books. The Library is available 8.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Thursday and 8.00am to 4.00pm on Fridays. The supervised time in the Library on an afternoon is available to students from Year 6 to Year 12

What’s Popular

The top borrowed books for Term I and Term II are all titles in the Junior Collection, these include ‘Diary of Wimpy Kid – The Last Straw’, ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid – The Ugly Truth’ and ‘Dog Man and Cat Kid‘. All borrowed 13 times over the past 14 weeks. All of these books are part of the Accelerated Reader Programme and have proved very popular with students. The Wimpy Kid series has 14 books to read and all books appear in the top 100 books borrowed in the Library.

E-Books have also been very popular particularly with junior school students. All students have access to our eBooks with Junior and Senior schools having separate sites to borrow books from.

Senior: https://tigs.wheelers.co/

Instructions to download eBooks can be found here

In the Senior School, Chess has enjoyed a resurgence with students playing before, after school and at lunchtimes. It has a dedicated Period 5 Co-Curricular lesson attended by around 20 students.

Library Programmes

The Library runs numerous reading programmes throughout the year. The Premiers Reading Challenge continues to be popular with students with 94 students signing up and 23 enthusiastic readers already completing the challenge.

The Renaissance Accelerated Reader Programme runs during library lessons with Mrs Bowmaker. Students are allocated levels based on their assessed reading ability and then select books based on this level. Students complete quizzes after each book has been read and their level hopefully improves over time. Students are rewarded for their commitment to reading with four students already included in the programme’s Millionaire’s Club. Parents with students involved in the Accelerated Reader Programme will have detailed explanations of the programme sent to them.

The library is grateful to have an active and helpful Year 10 Library leader in Thomas Bradley. Thomas has been a wonderful help to the library over the past two terms and during the previous year as well. Thomas has assisted us with a variety of things including shelving, circulation and assisting junior students.

 Library Events

Term II and Term III are exciting times with some upcoming events. National Simultaneous Storytime will allow Prep to Year 2 students to gather together again after last year’s COVID restrictions at students confined to classrooms. The chosen story this year is Give Me Some Space by Philip Bunting. There will also be some other fun items planned by Mr Green as well as a special guest reader.

In Term III, we are looking forward to welcoming Gus Gordon to TIGS to talk and present an illustration workshop to Year 1 to Year 6. Gus Gordon has written and illustrated around 80 titles most notably Herman and Rosie. He will be visiting as part of our Book Week Celebrations with this year’s theme being Old Worlds, New Worlds, Future Worlds. We also look forward to celebrating again with the annual Junior School dress-up day.

The Library will also be holding a Term III book fair to coincide with Special Persons Day at TIGS. The book fair is run in conjunction with Scholastic. Their book club catalogues are also administered via the library two times per month.
