Start of the Year
It has been wonderful to see the school year commence so smoothly. Year 7 is settling in nicely, and all students seem to have returned to school refreshed and ready to learn.
The school year starts at a busy pace at Illawarra Grammar. Already we have seen Information Evenings, the Year 7 camp, and the Senior School swimming carnival. Thank you to all the parents who have supported and enabled us to get underway so well.
Thank you, also, the parents who have contacted the School with feedback about the new Student Diary. We, too, are thrilled with the new design and layout, and I am thankful to our Marketing Team which oversaw this initiative.
Hoskins Building Update
Last week, in our pre-demolition of the Hoskins Building, materials suspected of containing asbestos were discovered. Destructive testing and analysis were carried out, and the material is being removed, assuming it contains non friable asbestos. Please find below some information from our Director of Operations and Facilities, Mr Matt Field, about the removal process. Please be reassured that we will follow all required safety precautions, of course.
Safe Removal of Chrysotile Asbestos-Containing Material
As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for our students, staff and visitors, and in preparation for our new Hoskins Building Project, we are writing to inform you about the planned removal of a material containing Chrysotile asbestos from the H Block building.
What You Need to Know:
- The affected material has been identified in the existing eave sheets and bathrooms of H Block, and has been existent since the building was completed in 1960s. In its current form and location, it poses no immediate risk. However, as this building is being demolished to make way for the Hoskins Building, the suspected asbestos will be removed following strict health and safety regulations.
- Chrysotile asbestos is classified as a very low-level asbestos. While it is generally considered less hazardous than other forms of asbestos, we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
- A licensed asbestos removal contractor, in compliance with all government and environmental guidelines, will carry out the work.
- SafeWork NSW has been notified of the planned removal, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- The eave sheet product will initially be sprayed with a PVA-based bonding agent to further ensure its integrity during the removal process.
- A 10-metre exclusion zone will be established around the work area to prevent unauthorised access and to ensure safety. Any works that are required to be completed within the 10m exclusion zone will be completed outside school hours.
- Air monitoring equipment will be deployed throughout the process to continuously assess and ensure safe air quality levels.
- Whilst site fencing has already been erected, the area will remain sealed and inaccessible until clearance is confirmed.
Our Commitment to Safety:
The health and safety of our students and staff remain our top priority. The removal process follows strict procedures, including containment, specialized protective equipment and disposal at a licensed facility. There is no risk to students or staff during or after the process.
Next Steps:
- We will continue to provide updates as needed and address any concerns you may have.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work to maintain a safe learning environment for everyone and embark on this exciting building and construction program.
Private Bus – Sibling Discount
From Term II, we will be introducing a sibling discount for our door-to-door private bus service.
Students from the same family, who are picked up from the same location, are eligible for a sibling discount from Term II. This amounts to a reduction of 15% for the second student, 25% for the third student and 50% for the fourth student.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students are assessed in Writing, Reading, Conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. All tests will be completed online during class time with the exception of Year 3 Writing which remains a pen and paper test. To see the types of questions and interactive features of NAPLAN Online, visit the public demonstration site.
The NAPLAN testing period for 2025 is Wednesday 12 March to Monday 24 March 2025.
In the Junior School, it is planned for students to participate in NAPLAN tests on the following days:
Date | NAPLAN Test |
Wednesday 12 March | Writing |
Thursday 13 March | Reading |
Monday 17 March | Conventions of Language |
Tuesday 18 March | Numeracy |
If a student is absent on these days, catch up tests will be arranged where possible before the end of the testing period.
A Junior School information session will be held in the 5D classroom on Thursday 20 February from 4.00pm to 4.30pm. The presentation will be uploaded to OLLE for anyone unable to attend.
General information about NAPLAN is available on the NESA website.
Illawarra Grammer values student achievements, so we understand how important it is to celebrate the efforts of all students in meaningful ways. However, due to the frequency and number of awards distributed, we have made adjustments to how and when these acknowledgements take place.
Previously, a significant portion of the Assembly was dedicated to distributing awards. This limited our ability to engage students fully in other meaningful activities. To address this, we have made the following changes:
- Grade or Stage Meetings: Certificates and awards are now often presented during grade meeting times, allowing for a more personalised and efficient acknowledgement of student achievements.
- Assemblies: A4 certificates and other significant awards are still presented at Assemblies, ensuring key moments of recognition remain public celebrations.
This shift allows us to balance time during Assemblies while continuing to honour the efforts of our students in special and meaningful ways. With our growing community, these adjustments ensure that every child has the opportunity to be recognised fairly and appropriately.
All students in Years 3 to 6 are required to have a blazer as part of their formal uniform. Blazers must be worn to Assembly, excursions and special events when the formal uniform is worn.
If your child’s blazer needs to be replaced or updated, please contact the Uniform Shop to arrange a fitting or purchase. Thank you for supporting our school uniform expectations.

Senior School News
Head of Senior School
Term I is well and truly underway! As I type this week’s newsletter, our Year 7 students are undertaking their final activities on the Year 7 Camp having spent four days completing a program linked to the theme of ‘community’. These activities, and a wealth of outdoor skills including pitching and sleeping in a tent, are designed to promote friendship, build trust and help our newest Senior School cohort to develop strong and resilient friendships that in many cases will last a lifetime.
Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of visiting our Library on Saturday morning. I was greatly encouraged to see so many students from Years 10, 11 and 12 who had taken time out of their weekend activities to prioritise their studies. Some students were keen to benefit from the offer of free tuition in their HSC subjects from exceptional graduates from the Class of 2024, others came to work with friends and to collaborate on study tasks together (in some cases using apps to log their study hours in good natured competition with their classmates undertaking study at home) and some simply came to benefit from a familiar, supportive and productive environment in which to complete homework or to get on top of their ongoing summary notes.
On Thursday, Rev Binggeli and I accompanied our Senior Prefects to the Archbishop’s Prefects’ Commissioning Service at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Sydney. The venue was packed with students from Anglican Schools from across the Sydney Diocese who had come together to be commissioned in their service to their respective schools. During his address, The Most Reverend Kanishka Raffel spoke from Mark 6 and helpfully drew our attention to the notion of hope. Of all the characteristics our leaders personify, the ability to carry a robust hope for the future and being able to inspire that hope in others is a wonderful quality evidenced in some of history’s finest leaders. For the Christian, it is good to be reminded that we are never ‘sheep without a shepherd’.
“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” Isaiah 40:31
Since the start of the new term, the School has received some concerns from our neighbours on Western Avenue, expressing their frustration when cars are parked across their driveways in the mornings, and particularly during the afternoon pick-up. We have also experienced issues when cars park in the area reserved for School buses whilst waiting for a son/daughter to arrive. This poses a significant risk to students as it means that buses, unable to park in their designated area, need to wait for the area to clear, and in doing so block visibility for oncoming traffic. It also leads to increased congestion, and ultimately frustration for other members of our community.
We are aware that Western Avenue can be very busy as students are departing but if you are collecting or dropping off your son/daughter please be mindful of our neighbours and park considerately, avoiding the area immediately in front of the Uniform Shop which is strictly reserved for buses collecting students. Thank you for your understanding and kind assistance in this regard.
Over the last few weeks, we have seen an increase in parents using mobile phones to take pictures or engaging in video calls whilst visiting the School site. Please be advised that in a school setting this is ill advised and inappropriate.
As per the School’s ‘Photography and Video Policy and Procedures’ document, available here:
“Parents should not be taking photographs or videos of the School campus or school students when it has no relation to their own children. Parents should also resist engaging in video calls on school premises which could inadvertently capture and publish the image of teachers and students without their consent”.
I am grateful to you in anticipation of your support
Illawarra Grammar’s Senior School Swimming Carnival took place at Western Suburbs Pool, Unanderra on Thursday, 6 February. In warm and sunny conditions, students brought their energy and competitive spirit to the pool, making it a fantastic event filled with outstanding performances and house pride.
The competition was close, with many strong individual and team performances in the pool. Kogara and Wolgal battled for the top spot, with Kogara ultimately securing the win by a narrow margin of 21 points.
One of the stand out performances on the day was Kai Pilkington breaking a 23 year record in the 16B 50m Freestyle, with a time of 26.30.
Congratulations to all participants for their efforts and to Kogara for their victory. Thank you to staff, students, and supporters for making the day a great success.

Student Voice
Rena Hamut (Year 11)
Welcome to 2025. We hope you all had a refreshing break. It’s been wonderful reconnecting with our school community over the past couple of weeks.
Our team is so excited for the year ahead and the opportunity to showcase the talent, achievements and diverse perspectives within our school community. Additionally, we are eager to start finalising our team for the year ahead and bring onboard some new Year 7 writers, once they have returned from Camp and settled into their first term.
As we begin the year, we want to highlight the core school value for 2025: Goodness. This value encourages us to act with kindness, integrity and compassion in all aspects of our lives, both in and out of School, even when it’s a difficult choice. This will be the central theme for our articles as we continue to highlight student achievements and activities within our School.
Finally, we’d like to conclude with a recap of the exciting Swimming Carnival, where we congratulate Kogara on their impressive win last Thursday. The determination and grit displayed by the House Captains were truly remarkable as they extended their winning streak from The Great Race. We’d also like to extend our congratulations to everyone involved: the volunteers who ensured the event ran smoothly and the competitors who demonstrated energy and enthusiasm throughout the day. And of course a big thank you to our teachers for making it such a wonderful way to commence Term I!
Saxon Parrish (Year 12)
As we begin 2025, it’s a great time to reflect on the past year and embrace the opportunities the new year brings. We can ask ourselves what went right, where we went wrong and how we can improve. At Illawarra Grammar, we are constantly encouraged to set achievable goals, and the start of a new year provides a fresh motivation to get things right. To make the most of this, it’s important to commit to learning from the outset and demonstrate grit, building habits that will carry us through the year.
Over the holidays, we hope you were able to connect with family, rest, recover and enjoy some relaxation before another year of hard work. This is especially important for Senior Students in Years 10, 11 and 12, and particularly for Year 12 students who face a busy year of upcoming HSC tasks. We hope to build on the fantastic results achieved by last year’s cohort.
During December and January, the many community celebrations, such as New Year and Christmas, were excellent opportunities for students across our School to connect with others – a key focus of our leadership. During this time, our School community came together through events such as the Christmas services and the Aquathon in Wollongong, where school spirit was evident even away from the School campus and prior to the school year commencing. In our first two full weeks back at School, we have already enjoyed the Swimming Carnival, which helped raise funds for our Year 12 charity, The Water Gift, with the support of students at our BBQ stall. To continue building on this momentum, we would appreciate any feedback or suggestions for school events and fundraisers from all students. This is now possible through the new SRC leaders in Year 10.
Finally, we would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Year 7 students, as well as those joining cohorts in Years 8 through to 11. We hope your transition into the Illawarra Grammar community is smooth, that you experience a warm welcome and that you will enjoy getting to make new friends and meeting your teachers.

So God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them
Genesis 1:27
As both our Junior and Senior School Chapels journey through the opening chapters of Genesis, we come to a profound truth: humanity is made in God’s image. In its ancient context, this was revolutionary—it humbled kings and lifted up the lowly, reminding us that every person has God-given dignity. But it’s even more than that. To be made in God’s image means we have the unique capacity to reflect God to others. When we see love, patience, kindness and discipline (Galatians 5:22-23), we see glimpses of God, a miniature portrait of God’s character. And ultimately, Jesus—the exact representation of God (Hebrews 1:3)—shows us who God truly is.
