Information from the School

Once again, welcome to 2025.

I hope all families received correspondence from the School last week which contained a letter from me, a fridge magnet with the term dates, a car sticker and a copy of the 2024 Academic Highlights brochure. The 2024 School Magazine will be distributed early Term 1, directly to the students.
Information about the dates of upcoming school events can be found on the School Calendar which can be located in OLLE. For more details about accessing this, please view the article titled OLLE Calendar later in this newsletter.

The Year Ahead

We are looking forward to a wonderful year at Illawarra Grammar. Some initiatives that will be introduced for our students in 2025 include the new STEM program in the Junior School, new electives in Year 8 and the introduction of the Year 9 Cambridge Science course. Teachers are also looking forward to the assurance that classes will be capped at 24 students, so that the academic care of their students can be made more effective and more personalised.

The Goodhew Research Centre (Library)

In response to requests from our senior students, The Goodhew Research Centre (Library) hours on Saturdays have been extended. From Saturday 8 February, the Library will be open for students in Years 10-12 from 9.00am to 2.00pm. University students will be available to offer advice in a range of subjects on most Saturdays.

Senior School News

Mr Nick Hackett
Head of Senior School

With palpable excitement and energy, the new school year has begun and, after a busy and productive 2024, the Illawarra Grammar community is excited to embrace all that lies ahead.

The hard work, grit and determination that characterised the graduating Class of 2024 produced some of the finest HSC results in the School’s history and I would like to once again congratulate these students and their teachers for their notable achievements. In recent weeks, I have been looking back through the School’s academic records and the significance of these results is stark: the percentage of 2024 Year 12 students who achieved in the top two attainment bands (64%), the average ATAR (80.31), the School’s ranking against every other NSW School (as published by The Sydney Morning Herald) and a range of other measures of academic performance all bear witness to the fact that the results achieved in 2024 are the highest the School has achieved in any of the available records and quite possibly in its long history. Well done indeed!

I commend our 2024 Academic Highlights brochure to you and Mr Breheny’s article below to learn more about the success stories and achievements in what was a remarkable year.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1

The start of a new school year is like opening a brand-new book—full of untold stories, fresh opportunities and unexpected adventures. But, of course, no beginnings stand alone; they’re connected to a bigger story. That’s why, in Chapel – both in the Junior and Senior School – we’re exploring Genesis—the book of beginnings. Genesis takes us back to where it all started—the universe, humanity, and the unfolding story of life itself. This term, we’ll be asking some big questions: What’s our purpose? How does the book of Genesis fit with scientific explanations? What’s our obligation to each other and the world around us? And what does the beginning tell us about where we’re headed? Every great story has a starting point, and 2025 is a new chapter for all of us. Here’s to new beginnings, big discoveries, and the year ahead!
